Cyberattack Targets Romania’s Ministry of Investments and European Projects, Procurement Platform Temporarily Offline

Romania’s Ministry of Investments and European Projects (MIPE) has become the latest public institution to face a cybersecurity incident after a cyberattack disrupted one of its online platforms used for private procurement procedures related to European-funded projects.

According to the ministry, the affected application was temporarily taken offline while technical teams began investigating the incident and working to restore normal operations.

Procurement Platform Affected

The cyberattack targeted the platform used by private beneficiaries involved in procurement procedures for projects financed through European funds. Although the application is currently unavailable, officials stated that the incident does not impact the implementation of projects financed through Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

Authorities have not yet provided an estimated timeline for the platform’s full restoration.

National Cybersecurity Authorities Respond

Following the attack, the ministry immediately notified the relevant national authorities responsible for cybersecurity and criminal investigations.

Teams from the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC), the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) are participating in the investigation. Their objective is to determine how the attack occurred, assess its impact, and identify those responsible.

Meanwhile, MIPE’s technical specialists continue working to secure the affected systems and restore the platform as quickly as possible.

No Confirmation of Data Breach

At this stage, officials have not confirmed that any sensitive information or databases have been compromised. Investigators are still analyzing the incident to determine whether the attackers gained unauthorized access to confidential data or whether the attack only affected the platform’s availability.

Additional information is expected once the forensic investigation is completed.

Growing Cybersecurity Concerns

The incident highlights the increasing cybersecurity challenges facing public institutions in Romania. Government agencies have become frequent targets of cyberattacks in recent years, emphasizing the need for stronger digital defenses, continuous monitoring, and rapid incident response capabilities.

Cybersecurity experts warn that attacks against public infrastructure can disrupt essential services and undermine public confidence in digital government systems if adequate protection measures are not in place.

Investigation Ongoing

The investigation remains active, and authorities are expected to release further details after completing their technical analysis. Officials continue to monitor the situation while working to restore full functionality of the procurement platform.

The cyberattack serves as another reminder that cybersecurity has become a critical component of modern public administration, particularly as governments continue expanding digital services and online platforms.
