What Is the NIS Directive?
The NIS Directive (Network and Information Security) is the EU's first comprehensive cybersecurity legislation — establishing security requirements and incident reporting obligations for operators of essential services and digital service providers.
The NIS Directive (Directive 2016/1148) was the European Union’s landmark piece of cybersecurity legislation, aiming to achieve a high common level of security for network and information systems across member states. It introduced binding cybersecurity requirements for operators of essential services (energy, transport, healthcare, banking) and digital service providers (cloud computing, online marketplaces, search engines).
Organizations subject to the NIS Directive were required to implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to manage security risks, and to notify competent national authorities of significant incidents. Romania transposed the Directive through Law No. 362/2018.
