Tech Giants Should Report Data Center Energy Consumption

Regulators and environmental groups are calling on major technology companies to disclose the energy consumption of their data centers — a critical step toward accountability as AI workloads drive electricity demand to record levels.

As artificial intelligence workloads rapidly scale, the energy footprint of hyperscale data centers has become a significant environmental and policy concern. Leading research institutions and the EU Energy Efficiency Directive now call on technology giants to publicly disclose detailed energy consumption figures — including Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratios, renewable energy sourcing, and water consumption for cooling.
